Everybody fits somewhere along the spectrum of linear thinking and organic thinking. Linear people like lists, think serially, and tend towards formulaic and predictable lifestyles. Organic thinkers tend to be more spontaneous and eclectic in their thinking. They are comfortable in the abstract and can pull meaning easily out of it. Linear thinkers err on the side of boil Christianity down to a list of "do's" & "don'ts", while organic thinkers err on the side of overly permissive living. Linear thinkers and organic thinkers need each other's strengths to make sense of how to follow God. It's clear that God put limits and confines in place to keep his kids from running into the highway in front of a semi truck. Yet, Jesus railed on the religious leaders of His day who were oppressing people with their pride and empty rituals. God wants to lead us in an intimate, dynamic relationship with Him, complete with blessings and victory over trials. A perfect combo of both.
