I would say that I can be forgetful. Definitely. It's really not unusual for me to leave and come back into the house 4-5 times before actually leaving. To retrieve things that are of course absolutely necessary for the day. Can I get an amen? Forgetfulness shows up other ways too. When we have friends from years past around, we enjoy reminiscing about good memories with them. We grow gray hairs stressing over this and that, even though just a week ago, God provided supernaturally to deal with this and that. Our brain just can't keep everything at the forefront. Forgetfulness seems part of the human condition. Which is why God spends so much time urging us to remember. The word is used 166 times in the Bible! Interestingly, 130 times in the Old Testament, and 36 in the New Testament. Remembering is a Holy Spirit thing. If we tap into the Holy Spirit, we can have divine remembering superpowers! Cue Superman music. But really. As followers of Christ, we have access to the Holy Spirit, who can help us prioritize remembering God's goodness and the tenets of the Bible, His recipe for a good life on earth and thereafter.
I don't know about you but I think in general, we are blessed with the good life in the USA and beyond. Target sells like 50 different types of pillows for Pete's sake. So we can get exactly our perfect fluffiness level to lay our head upon at night. This is great, I personally go for the down ultra-soft fluffiness level. Talk about the good life. In Deuteronomy 8, God warns that when times are good, "[our] hearts will become proud and [we] will forget the Lord" (14). We will attribute our success to our own effort, instead of God's grace and provision in our lives, as the source of all good things on earth. In Deuteronomy 10, God gives us all sorts of creative ways of remembering, like writing them all over our homes (maybe that's where all the plaques come from...oh boy.) and making bracelets with God's word written on it. But really, the essence of it is that when things are going good, it is hard to remember where it came from and it is hard to remember to praise God continually. And when we forget these things, our hearts get out of alignment and we lose our impact and strength in the world as His followers and even our ability to enjoy the goodness of our lives. So I guess you could say that this has been a friendly reminder to remember.
